PHOTODYNAMIC THERAPY WITH LEVULAN
Photodynamic therapy is a very effective field-treatment for precancerous growths. A topical medication, Levulan Kerastick® (aminolevulinic acid), is applied to the skin and absorbed by the cells. Following a set time period, the Levulan is activated by a light source, thereby producing reactive oxygen species which destroy target cells. The easy access of skin to light-based therapy has led physicians to apply PDT to other skin disorders such as acne and squamous cell carcinoma in situ.
Following the procedure, mild crusting and redness is expected. After the treatment, you will need to avoid direct light exposure 48 hours and follow strict sun protection for 2 weeks.
